In 1997 John became the director of the Japan Church Planting Institute (CPI) which has two broad based purposes:
1. envisioning for multiple gospel-driven church planting movements and
2. stimulation for personal spiritual renewal and transformation through the transforming power of the Gospel.
Since 1994, CPI has trained more than 1,700 foreign missionaries and Japanese leaders and workers at the CPI national annual conference. Participants have come from over 120 agencies and denominations, from every area of Japan, and from over a dozen foreign countries. CPI is a core ministry of the Japan Evangelical Missionary Association (JEMA).
